FAQ for Sue Gleason's Crossword Program

Q. When I finish typing a word, the program I usually use just stops and lets me choose the next word.
A. Too bad. You need to type or click unnecessarily every time that happens.
Q. How do I get to the next word if I can't answer a clue?
A. Hit the ENTER key.
Q. What word is next?
A. There are four possible word orderings:
The across cluewalk sequence - reading across the columns, then down the rows
The analogous down cluewalk sequence - reading down the rows, then across the columns
The across gridwalk sequence - a word is followed by a connected word beneath it.
The down gridwalk sequence - a word is followed by a conected word to its right.

The first path is the only familiar one. The gridwalk sequences may consist of several disconnected segments. In addition, long words may appear more than once in the path. However, if you tab through a whole gridwalk, you will hit every clue at least once, and benefit from shared crossers as much as possible. The current ordering is determined by a combination of the "direction" and "walk" options. The program starts with my favorite ordering,- the across gridwalk,- but feel free to change it.

Q. I don't want to go to the word you have picked for me!
A. Try the cluewalk instead of the gridwalk. That may be what you expect.
In any case, you can always click explicitly on any square or clue you prefer.
Q. How do I switch from across to down?
A. Hit the TAB key, click on a clue, or click on ACROSS or Down near the bottom left.
Q. How do I change the other options?
A. Click on the value you want, or type the asterisk key, followed by the first letter
of the setting or the digit that you are selecting
For example, *c selects cluewalk; *7 uses the largest size letters.
Q. What other keys are recognized?
A. The arrow keys move the cursor in the grid. The ENTER key advances the cursor to the next word.
Q. What happens if I click on a clue?
A. The direction will change if necessary, and the cursor moves in the grid
