My motivation for doing the survey was a sense that we had a group heavily oriented toward the sciences, which seemed surprising for a literary pursuit. The total of Math and Science Professors and other scientists is 8; adding the actuary, engineer and computer scientists as well, gives a total of 19 scientists. On the other hand, the "word people" (lawyers, librarians, editors, writers, other teachers and academics, crossword constructor) make up a total of 18. So math/sci prevails!

Note: a couple of people are listed in two categories.

As far as the number of people retired or working full-time, that proved difficult. Many of us have some other status:
free lance, part time, volunteer, emeritus, of counsel, etc.
